Banryu is a brand consulting and content-producing company, providing support to clients in building brand strategy and creating content and events with collaborators.

Banryu is written as ‘万流 (banryu)’ in kanji, where 万 (man/ban) means ‘ten thousand’ and 流 (ryu) means ‘flow’ or ‘stroke.’ The word originates from ‘酒屋 (sakaya - sake brewery) 万流 (banryu - ten thousand styles),’ which signifies: ‘There are many breweries around Japan. Even though some of them are small, every brewery has its own passion, character, and taste, but they all share the same goal: to make great sake.’ Banryu believes this idea should hold true for its clients and seeks to respect their unique qualities. Every company has its own styles, passions, flows, and visions.

I have prepared eight types of flow animation on a background. The number eight is considered a lucky number in Japan and also implies a hundred or a million. There are many idioms and terms in Japanese that include ‘eight’ to express a variety of things.

Website design (developed by Jason Chow from HATO)

Inspired by 龍爪書 (Dragon Claw Script, a style which uses traces of dragon nails as a motif) of Wang Xizhi, every line used in this design flows freely, following the philosophy of Banryu. As for the web design, my concept is ‘flows,’ ‘floating,’ ‘flexibility,’ ‘playfulness,’ ‘uniqueness’ as the logo and company name has those kinds of ideas.

Wang Xizhi developed various calligraphy styles, including playful ones inspired by animals and nature, such as ‘Tiger Claw Script,’ ‘Tortoise Script,’ and ‘Cloud Script.’ Through the brand building process, I can say that I was greatly influenced by Wang Xizhi’s free and flexible thinking.
