No.032_4 昆布の森プロジェクト (Reforesting Kombu Project) - Shionogi Healthcare

Branding for the 昆布の森プロジェクト (Reforesting Kombu Project). Shionogi Healthcare initiated the Reforesting Kombu Project (kelp forest restoration) to revive the forest-like growth of natural gagome kelp in Hakodate, Hokkaido. The objective is to safeguard and rejuvenate natural gagome kelp by enhancing cultivated breeds and establishing a comprehensive cultivation and circulation system. The ultimate goal is to transition the raw materials for this product from natural to cultured, aiming for ‘100% cultured gagome kelp’ production by 2024.

The logo, resembling a kelp, is designed to depict the Chinese character for ‘forest (森),’ symbolising the aspiration for the kelp forest to flourish once more in the sea of Hakodate, Hokkaido. We illustrated the lost kelp forest on the seabed as a key visual for the website. The website is designed to evoke the sensation of diving into the sea as users scroll through its content.

An essential part of conveying the Reforesting Kombu Project is the presence of Fucoidan Protect, a supplement created by Shionogi Healthcare using gagome kelp. My involvement in designing the packaging for Fucoidan Protect initiated the Reforesting Kombu Project. For the packaging design of Fucoidan Protect, I introduced something called ‘Kelp Graphics,’ reminiscent of swaying kelp, as the background.

However, this kelp graphic expresses undulating movement by layering multiple colours, presenting a considerable challenge in the printing process for packaging design. As a result, I received numerous ironic remarks from several printing companies, stating,‘What a worthwhile job!’
