No.037 Banryu Tenugui Cloths - 万流 (Banryu inc.)
For Banryu Inc.’s 4th anniversary, I designed Tenugui cloths for the occasion. Tenugui is a traditional Japanese fabric made from cotton or hemp. Typically rectangular, approximately 35cm x 90cm, it serves various purposes beyond wiping the face, such as a handkerchief or accessory. Tenugui is known for its traditional patterns and designs, often reflecting the season or special occasions. For the observant, hidden Banryu logos have been incorporated into the design.
The design is inspired by the appearance and function of a river: the upstream reaches in the mountains carve out rocks, the midstream reaches in the plains transport stones, and the downstream reaches near the river mouth deposit sediment. While there are many things to say about this concept, I have designed the Tenugui cloths in a non-intrusive way with a comfortable distance from these explanations - I prefer designs that do not lecture or overpower the user.
